When I realized that the book ‘Tattoos in Japanese prints’ was based on the fabulous print collection in the Museum of Fine Arts (MFA, Boston), I immediately decided to purchase it. After a careful reading, my impression is slightly ambivalent, though globally positive. On the one hand, the book is very carefully illustrated, printed and bound, which deserves a special mention as too many books today are printed in a rather rough way. But on the other hand, the content of the book does not fully meet my expectations. The text is too basic and short for the advanced print lover or collector, with general and historical reminders which would find a better place in an introductive book than in a focused, specialised one. Much emphasis is placed on historical prints and parodies (mitate-e) by Kuniyoshi, Kunisada and Kunichika, which make a large part of the lavish illustrations. By contrast, other prints where tattoos frequently occur are little mentioned: for instance, erotic prints (shunga) by Eisen and others, or firemen prints by Yoshitsuya and Yoshiiku, or else ‘modern’ prints by Yoshitoshi, Binnie and others are forgotten. My general feeling is that the content of the book is restricted to an easily accessible text and ‘nice’ prints, either by an editorial decision or by the unavailability of prints in the MFA collection (which is unlikely). Anyway, the theme of tattoos in Japanese prints is therefore not fully explored in the book, which is a bit sad in my eyes. However, as stated above, my impression is globally positive: the book is well-made, well-illustrated, surprisingly affordable, and therefore finds its place in any good bookcase on Japanese prints.
I am a fan of tattoos, Japanese style tattoos, and ukiyo-e imagery. This book is about THE very specific intersection of these things. If you're looking for anything else, there are better choices. If you're looking for a book about tattoos, this book will disappoint you. If you're looking for a book featuring Japanese tattoos, look elsewhere. If you're looking for ukiyo-e imagery, look elsewhere. If you're looking for ukiyo-e imagery that depicts tattoos then this is your book! Don't get me wrong, I love the book! I just didn't know exactly what it was before I bought it.
This work supplies a summary of the Japanese tattoo tradition that began in the late Edo period. It includes excellent pictures of Kuniyoshi, Kunisada, and Kunichika prints. I cannot recommend this book enough, it is high quality and Sarah Thompson does an excellent job. I think tattooers in particular would benefit immensely from this book. I collect Ukiyo-e and love Japanese tattooing and history, if you are the same, you need this book, and for what it provides compared to a lot of other tattoo books, it is a great value. All around wonderful book and purchase, I find myself looking at it all the time.
